Installation_Information This chapter lists supplemental information to the IRIS Software Installation Guide. The information listed here is product- and release-specific; use it with the Installation Guide to install this product. 2.1 General_Installation_Information If you are installing this software from the Desktop Special Edition CD you may not wish to install all the products. There are three methods you can use to help determine what software products you wish to install. You can insert the CD and read the release notes for each product (refer to the CD installation booklet included with the CD for information on how to do this). A second method is to insert the CD, double-click on the icon and click "Custom Installation" in the Software Manager application to browse the products on the CD. For more complete information we recommend that you first install only the WhatsNew product and the 1_1_DesktopSpecialEdition release notes. The WhatsNew product will display extensive information about all the products on the Desktop Special Edition CD the first time you log into your system. If you already have a World Wide Web Server installed on your system, we advise you to read through the release notes for the OutBox product before you install your Desktop Special Edition software. If you are running early releases of the Netscape Communications Server (prior to version 1.12), Silicon Graphics recommends that you upgrade to version 1.12. It is important to read the release notes for version 1.12 prior to installing it. If you are a software developer and have il_dev already installed on your system, refer to chapter 3, Known Problems and Workarounds. Do not install the Showcase 3.3.3 product if you are running in the Japanese, Korean or Chinese locales. Instead, install the version of Showcase that appears in the latest version of the language module for your locale. If you have already installed Showcase 3.3.2 or Showcase 3.3.3 you must install patch 1005 to restore the CID font capability. - 2 - 2.2 Information Specific to Systems with Desktop Special Edition Pre-Installed To determine whether your system has the Desktop Special Edition software pre-installed on the hard disk use the Software Manager tool, click on the "Manage Installed" button and look in the list of software for the "1_1_DesktopSpecialEdition" product. The presence of this product on your hard disk indicates that you have the Desktop Special Edition software pre-installed on your system. If you have the Desktop Special Edition software pre- installed on your system the following information applies: o You may have purchased additional software products included with your system (e.g. Indy Modeller, WebFORCE). In order to determine which additional products have been installed on your system refer to the WhatsNew pages by selecting "What's New?" on the Find menu of the Toolchest. o There may be additional products on your Desktop Special Edition CD that have not been pre-installed on your hard disk. To install these products refer to the CD installation booklet included with the CD. These products may require a license. To obtain temporary licenses send electronic mail (email) to demolicense@sgi.com. The content of the message is ignored. You will receive an automatic email response to your license request. Alternatively, you can use the World Wide Web to request temporary licenses from http://www.sgi.com/Products/Evaluation/. o The PC-NFS Server Components product is included on the Desktop Special Edition CD but may not been pre- installed on your hard disk. In order to use or configure this product you must first install the NFS product. If you do not have the NFS product, it may be purchased from your local Silicon Graphics representative. o Several software patches have been pre-installed on your hard disk. There are several additional patches that can be installed from the CD. Refer to section 2.6 for patch information. - 3 - 2.3 Upgrading_IRIX_5.3_Systems_to_Desktop_Special_Edition The following information applies to systems running IRIX 5.3 that are being upgraded to run the Desktop Special Edition software. o If you already have a World Wide Web Server installed on your system, we advise you to read through the release notes for the OutBox product before you install your Desktop Special Edition software. If you are running early releases of the Netscape Communications Server (prior to version 1.12), Silicon Graphics recommends that you upgrade to version 1.12. It is important to read the release notes for version 1.12 prior to installing it. o In order to properly view all documentation for the Desktop Special Edition software, you are advised to install the Netscape Navigator product. If your WEBBROWSER environment variable has been set to point to a browser other than the Netscape Navigator, you are advised to unset the variable or change it to point to the Netscape Navigator. o There are several software patches included on the Desktop Special Edition CD. Please refer to section 2.6 for patch information. 2.4 Upgrading_IRIX_6.1_Systems_to_Desktop_Special_Edition The following information applies to systems running IRIX 6.1 that are being upgraded to run the Desktop Special Edition software. o Desktop Special Edition is supported on IRIX 5.3 and 6.1, but the digital media tools contained in the dmedia_tools product do not support MPEG and Quicktime movie playback on IRIX 6.1. This limitation will prohibit certain sample movies from playing. 2.5 Product_Licenses_Installed 2.5.1 License Information for Systems with Desktop Special Edition Pre-Installed A number of Desktop Special Edition applications require a license.
